Earth Hour doesn't help in any way .
Translations available in: English (original) | French | Spanish | Italian | German | Portuguese | Swedish | Russian | Dutch | Arabic

I don't see what difference swtiching off lights for an hour would do to save the planet. Earth Hour isn't a very good idea. It may make people aware that we are doing "something wrong" when it comes to the environment, but it really doesn't help. It may make some people guilty that they aren't doing their bit. But,what difference will switching off lights for an hour each year make ? Won't people still be burning candles ?.. Think about it. Candles still release pollution. So what's the point.
We should go back to what we were taught in school - to turn off electricity using appliances and lights when not in use. Why have a light burning in the next room when no one's there. The more important thing is to make people realize that light pollution is a serious issue. Birds confuse bright city/building/skyscraper lights for the sun's light and many die in flight because they crash into buildings. So maybe we could have rules to dim the lights on all commercial buildings after a certain period of time after sunset. Light pollution also makes it difficult to spot stars in the night sky as well as creating sleeping problems in human beings. The concept of Earth Hour is well-meaning, but its impractical.
A little common sense instead of this overzealous enthusiasm would be better.

I agree with u in the matter... the problem with humans is that we take steps on the basis of very objective approach... In other words, we ignore many factors and effects keeping in view a very temporary objective....

Do u think we r turning off lights to protect environment?? Not at all, we r turning our lights to save our fossil fuel so that we hav a longer time to burn it....

Energy is the issue...presently environment protection issue is ignorable as compared to energy issue.... Is it not surprising, the most of the population on the earth is poor enough to use Air Conditions or big vehicles.... Even very small number of countries in the world are in danger of external attacks(terrorism or cold wars)....remaining countries have not such issues and therefore, dont have the reason to expend billions of dollars on capturing Oil reserves and burning fossil fuel for political power without bounds.....

Environment protection is the secondary issue... first we hav to manage fossil fuel for tomorrow to run our factories and to light our very big home... a poor person's family has hardly two energy savers and one fan at home.. and often faces shutdown of electricity.... and can even live without light.... problem is with power striving ppl and nations....

I think poor countries need not to turn off their enegy savers of about 40-60 watts to save fuel for the fighting nations.... candle light at least in my country is being used only by those ppl who cant buy generators that run on fossil fuel....So i think in poor countries ppl should be let to turn on their lights AS NEEDED rather to force them to burn candles to pollute the environment....

we can make valuable steps towards environmental protection only by forcing the government to use alternative energy resources(hydropower etc etc), and to invest in the projects to protect the envirment in a fectory and outside the factory, and to make alternative of petrol or diesel cheap enough to be used by commons..... All these steps need governement support....NGOs can contribute a lot but only with the support of the government and factory owners and that contribution should be made but without the support the contribution can be of very samll value.... 10 yrs of hardwork of an NGO for environment protection in a town can be destroyed by just an ordinary factory in 6 months(or even less).....
